Today, my sister showed me an interesting mail that I can’t wait to share with you.
This is a mail for my father. My sister was very curious about the mail, so she opened it without permission. If I haven’t seen the mail myself, I will not be happy of what she did. This is how the mail looks like.

It looks like there’s a check inside and it has an amount of 50 dollars. So, I opened it and I realized that there are 2 checks in it:

But when I folded it carefully, it became like this:

Wait a minute…
This is not a check or 2 checks. This is just a voucher that allow their customer to get $100 discount for every purchases.
Is that crazy?
This reminds me of some Marketing 101 I used to study. This is a good trick to arouse curiosity and get people to open the mail. It does help in getting some awareness but it won’t work well as soon as people get disappointed.
This trick is used in many places. Do you realized that the burger served by McDonald is quite different than the ones in the photo? McDonald can afford to do that because they already build their reputation and became quite popular. Using this trick might not hurt their business but not the small business owner.
When a small business just started and they use this kind of trick, they will get their customers disappointed and get some bad words spread around the market. Customers are disappointed and they think that you are not delivering your promise.
So, how this apply to blog traffic?
Marketing 101 says that when product performance exceeds customer expectation, customers are delighted. On the other hand, customers will be disappointed. If the business is delivering less than what customers expect, people will leave their business and never want to come back again.
Same as blogs…
If you are using article marketing, video marketing or posting new content on your blog, your readers will be delighted. They will come back often, spread the word for you and buy products you recommend.
For example: you wrote a post on your blog with a title “How To Get Hundreds Of Visitors Within 3 Days”. When your readers read your post, they realized that you gave them some insider secrets, valuable tips no one ever mentioned with some success example. Do you think they will love you? Do you think that they will spread the word or buy few products from you.
What if you reverse everything, you wrote some basic tips such as “just go to comment on few blogs”, “participate forums” or “submit an article a day” such tips. Do you think they will feel cheated and hate you for wasting their time? They might unsubscribe or never believe in you again.
So, use the rule: “Give more than what they expect!”
You’ll realize a higher conversion and lots of word of mouth traffic!

Great article. I always fall for the check in the mail trick, even though most of my money is dealt with via electronic means and I rarely get a check.
I always find it easier to sell products online when you give the visitor what they came to your site for in the first place, information. Information on your niche, your products, and how to use the effectively. Even if you sell a service, giving a tutorial on how to do it themselves can be a great motivation to buy your product.
For example, an article, “Here is How you Mow Your Lawn” could bring in customers for a mowing business. A lot of the time people really don’t want to have to put forward the work, and you are right there to take it off their hands.
Thanks for the article!

What you mentioned is very true. If I am offering property to my clients, teaching them how to choose a good and cheap property will attract more clients because they trust me based on that relationship and my expertise I showed them.
Good point that you brought up.
nice tips, but too general, can to specifies it to more simple

Ya. This is meant to be general. It’s called the “Core marketing concept” in marketing textbook. You can’t use this directly.
